I think the
water quality in India has been improving in recent years. Trustworthy or not,
filtered water and reverse osmosis (R.O) water are abundant, be it in train
station, subway station, government offices or on the street. Many guesthouses
also offer free refill R.O water for drinking. I have been drinking this since
Varanasi. P said the water filter in the guesthouse looked sketchy. My gut feel
tells me it is safe to drink it.

Having said
that, there are still many households in India which have no access to water
supply. So from where they get the portable water? Again, stop guessing.
