Lumbini – The Birth Place of Buddha

Lumbini is the historical birth place of Prince Gautama Siddhartha Buddha. It was fairly certain that Buddha was born here, under a sal tree, in the month of May 523 BC.
Maya Devi Temple – the exact spot where Queen Maya Devi of Kapilavastu gave birth to Gautama Siddhartha, more than 2500 years ago
Ashoka Pillar – an important relic erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC
The huge 1 x 2 miles of Lumbini Development Zone is designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange in 1978
Together with Bodhgaya where Siddhartha achieved enlightenment, Sarnath where Buddha preached the first sermon after attaining enlightenment and Kushinagar where Buddha died, Lumbini form the four holiest Buddhism sites in the world. They have been the most important destination for Buddhist pilgrimages ever since.

Note: Lumbini, the Birthplace of the Lord Buddha is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site (Cultural Site) inscribed in 1997.
