Lumbini is the
historical birth place of Prince Gautama Siddhartha Buddha. It was fairly
certain that Buddha was born here, under a sal tree, in the month of May 523 BC.

The huge 1 x 2 miles of Lumbini Development Zone is
designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange in 1978

Together with
Bodhgaya where Siddhartha achieved enlightenment, Sarnath where Buddha preached
the first sermon after attaining enlightenment and Kushinagar where Buddha
died, Lumbini form the four holiest Buddhism sites in the world. They have been
the most important destination for Buddhist pilgrimages ever since.
Note: Lumbini,
the Birthplace of the Lord Buddha is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site
(Cultural Site) inscribed in 1997.
